A Lifelong Passion for Horses & Veterinary Medicine

Growing up in a rural setting allowed Dr. Martin the opportunity to follow his passion for animals and agriculture. Dr. Martin grew up riding horses through much of the Cuyamaca back country. He raised market and breeding hogs, had a firewood business and a small tree farm while in high school. Dr. Martin was extremely active in the Future Farmers of America (FFA), which paved his way to his undergraduate degree and career goal of becoming a veterinarian.

Education & Veterinary Career

Areas of interest for Dr. Martin include Equine Medicine and Surgery, Ophthalmology and all aspects of Geriatric and Preventative care. He has a specific interest in advanced dental care for equines. He has been providing advanced and performance dentistry for over 2 decades. Dr. Martin feels strongly that prevention is the best medicine. He has found that being proactive rather than reactive is in the best interest of our equine companions.

Throughout his distinguished career, Dr. Martin has cared for an extraordinary range of horses—from beloved backyard companions to elite performance athletes. For more than 30 years, he served as the equine veterinarian for the U.S. Border Patrol Mounted Unit and as the sole veterinary provider for the Budweiser Clydesdales at SeaWorld San Diego. Dr. Martin and his practice also served as contract veterinarians for the San Diego Humane Society, providing veterinary care for equine cases involving neglect and abuse. He worked closely with the San Diego Humane Society Equine Rescue Reserve, assisting with complex and challenging rescues, including helicopter extractions.

Beyond his clinical work, Dr. Martin has been honored to support numerous equine nonprofit rescue organizations, youth riding clubs, and Saddles in Service, a nonprofit dedicated to equine-assisted therapy for military personnel and first responders living with PTSD. His decades of experience reflect not only a deep expertise in equine medicine, but also a lifelong commitment to the welfare, rehabilitation, and well-being of horses and the people whose lives they enrich.

Dr. Martin shares his life with his childhood sweetheart and wife of over 40 years. Together they have a son and daughter and four grandsons. He has interests outside veterinary medicine that follow his rural upbringing. He is a avid outdoorsman that enjoys hunting, camping and all shooting sports. He also enjoys rock crawling in his Jeep and spending time at his ranch in the Cuyamaca mountains.

Dr. Martin feels truly blessed. He is fortunate to be outdoors each day pursuing a career he loves, blending his passion for horses and people, now in the beautiful backdrop of Colorado's Front Range.
